BRIEF DESCRIPTION :

Hybrid ATF Moving Coil Dipole Loudspeaker

DESCRIPTION :

Recent strides in magnetic thin-film technology led to the development of Mosaic's remarkable mid- and high-frequency drivers. These new Advanced Thin Film transducers are superior in almost every respect to conventional moving-coil drivers – very similar in many operational and performance characteristics to the electrostatics that we've always favored, in fact. This is particularly apparent in the rare combination of pinpoint stereo imaging within a deep, three-dimensional sound field that only electrostatic and ATF™ drivers seem capable of achieving. ATF drivers can be smaller than electrostatic panels, however, and they are less difficult and expensive to manufacture.

Our proprietary Vojtko™ crossover topology marries the ATF drivers to a high-resolution 8-inch aluminum-cone woofer, whose precise, authoritative bass rounds out the sonic package. The physical package is something special as well. Made entirely of wood, the cabinet borrows the sonically welded, constrained-layer construction first used for Clarity to express beautifully flowing lines.

Advanced Thin-Film Drivers

Based on RADIA planar technology, high-resolution ATF™ drivers approach the clarity and detail of our electrostatic panels while permitting the use of a compact cabinet. Each MartinLogan ATF transducer has a micro-thin, low-mass diaphragm with an ultra-light, etched aluminum conductive surface, suspended between two opposite-polarity, high-field-strength neodymium magnet arrays. When the electrical audio signal from an amplifier passes through the diaphragm's surface, it creates an alternating electromagnetic field that interacts with the fields of the fixed magnet arrays, forcing it back and forth to produce sound waves in the air. The strength and polarity of the diaphragm's field varies according to the audio signal.

Like our electrostatic panels, ATF drivers are push-pull transducers: When the diaphragm's field polarity is the same as that of the magnet array on one side, pushing them apart, it is the reverse of the polarity on the other side, pulling it toward that opposing array with exactly the same force. This mode of operation is inherently linear. Another similarity to electrostats is that the diaphragm is driven uniformly over its entire surface, rather than at just a small contact area as in a conventional cone or dome driver. These two characteristics ensure precise, accurate reproduction with vanishingly low distortion.

The diaphragm substrate is Dupont KaladexŽ PEN (polyethylene napthalate). This material is chemically akin to the PET (polyethylene terathylate) film used for the diaphragms of our CLS™ Generation 2 electrostatic panels, but capable of handling the heat generated by the current passing through an ATF diaphragm's thin aluminum skin.

Vojtko™ Crossover

Carefully hand-built using only the finest polypropylene capacitors and air-core coils, the crossover employ's MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko topology for vanishingly low distortion and seamless driver integration. This precision-tuned network preserves even the most microscopic sonic nuances while handling the full dynamics of any source.

Low-Distortion Aluminum-Cone Woofer

By eliminating cone flexure, aluminum diaphragms help our advanced-technology woofers achieve the very low distortion necessary for proper blending with MartinLogan electrostatic panels.

Constrained-Layer Cabinet

Mosaic's cabinet is constructed of multiple wood laminates, sonically welded for extreme rigidity and inertness. This same technique enables the cabinet to be made with gentle curves that enhance its visual integration into the home. It is available in two distinctive finishes: native cherry and black.

Dipole Sound Radiation

The sound we hear from a loudspeaker is a combination of direct radiation from it to our ears and reflections off of room surfaces - walls, floor, and ceiling. How our brains integrate all this information is far from simple. Depending on the angle of incidence to the ears and the arrival-time difference between direct and reflected sound, reflections can either blur detail and stereo imaging or enhance the natural impression of depth and openness.

True dipole speakers have long been noted for their near-ideal radiation patterns. They send very little sound to the sides, thereby minimizing side-wall reflections with short arrival times that tend to interfere with perception of the direct sound. Their strong rear radiation, however, produces a generous amount of ambience-enriching later-arriving reflections off the wall behind them.

Toolless Binding Posts

MartinLogan's proprietary toolless binding posts make cable connection and management easy.

Energy Transfer Coupler Spikes

The Mosaic is supplied with sturdy, 1/4-20 MiniETC™ spikes, which can be used in place of the standard feet to enhance stability on thick carpets or to create tighter coupling between speaker and floor.

Application Versatility

Mosaic's size, styling, and performance make it suitable for almost any speaker application, even in combination with our electrostatic models. In small rooms or large, as part of a stereo music system or in a home theater as fronts, surrounds, or both, Mosaic delivers.
